La historia del niño cubano Elián González todavía no ha concluido, pero ya hay suficientes elementos para analizar su vertiginosa parábola. En este artículo se analiza la transformación de Elián en símbolo político, mensajero religioso, mesías liberador y por último prueba del más reciente fracaso político de la derecha cubana de Miami. Pero este traspié, si bien se suma a los vanos intentos que durante décadas esta parte del exilio cubano desplegó contra el régimen de Fidel Castro, se destaca, al contrario, porque por primera vez el gobierno de Estados Unidos no satisface las demandas de este sector. Parece así concluir la larga época en la que el exilio cubano dictó la agenda de las relaciones entre ambos países.

The history of the Cuban child Elián González has not yet come to an end, but there are sufficient elements to enable us to analyze its vertiginous parabola. In this article, the author analyzes the transformation of Elián into a political symbol, a religious messenger, a liberating Messiah and finally, the proof of the most recent political setback of the Cuban Right in Miami. However, this setback, while it may be seen as another just another failure to be added to the vain attempts to overthrow the regime of Fidel Castro, is of particular importance because, for the first time, the United States government did not support the demands of this sector. This appears to mark the end of a prolonged period during which the Cuban exiles dictated the agenda which determined the relations between the two countries.
