En este artículo se analiza el impacto de la impunidad y la experiencia de los testigos-afectados por una masacre, en un juicio reciente (1998-1999) por violación a los derechos humanos en Guatemala. Se recoge a experiencia de las víctimas y el significado de la memoria colectiva como testimonio de la violencia, así como la manera en que la gente afrontó la impunidad reivindicando el sentido de justicia. Se analizan las respuestas de resistencia activa y conductas asertivas frente a una estrategia de manipulación, confusión y hostigamiento para distorsionar las responsabilidades públicas y la memoria de los hechos, criminalizando a las propias víctimas. El impacto psicosocial de la impunidad tiene efectos profundos y múltiples que obstaculizan los esfuerzos de reconstrucción pos-traumática, amenazando las creencias de la gente en el valor de la justicia en la sociedad.

This article analyzes the impact of impunity and the experience of the witnesses affected by a bloodbath, in a recent court case for the violation of human rights in 1998-1999. It registers the experience of the victims and the significance of the collective memory as a testimony of violence. It also analyzes how those affected confronted the impunity, reclaiming the application of justice. Emphasis is placed on the active resistance and the assertive attitude assumed in the face of the manipulations and harassment used to distort official responsabilities and the very memory of the event, to the extent of criminalizing the victims themselves. In conclusion, the authors argue that the psychosocial impact of impunity has profound and varied effects which obstruct the attempts to recover from the traumatic experience of the recent violence and threaten the community's belief in the possibility of justice in the society.
