Hacer investigación en un «centro físico de la cultura transnacional», en este caso el Banco Mundial, me permitió explorar empíricamente cuestiones relacionadas con distintos tópicos del campo de estudios sobre transnacionalismo, globalización y cosmopolitismo. En el Banco Mundial es hegemónico un sistema de ideas vinculado al ejercicio de poder, una «ideología global» formada por las fuerzas homogeneizadoras de la estructura burocrática, de la ideología del desarrollo, de la lengua y de la educación, y por la relación entre estas fuerzas y distintos momentos de expansión y (re)estructuración del sistema mundial.

The author´s research within a center dominated by a transnational culture, the World Bank, enabled him to explore empirically problems related to current studies on transnationalism, globalization and cosmopolitanism. Is a truly transnational culture being developed within the Bank? What type of cosmopolitanism can exist within a global bureaucracy? What is the relationship between the presence of determined ethnic sectors and the wider processes of globalization? He argues that within the Bank what dominates is a system of ideas related to the exercise of power, a 'global ideology´ molded by the homo-genizing forces of the bureaucratic structure, the ideology of development, the language and the educational experience. He also points out the need to examine the relationship between these influences and the different moments of expansion and (re) structuring of the world system.
