La integración centroamericana cambió sustantivamente de 1986 a la fecha. El presente artículo pretende mostrar algunos de los principales rasgos de esa transformación y varias de sus más notables consecuencias. Se describe también el conjunto de normas e instancias que han surgido con los cambios del paradigma integrador, a su vez influido por las tendencias políticas y económicas globales. Precisamente, podría decirse que la región centroamericana está cada vez menos integrada y más globalizada.

Central American integration has changed substantially from 1986 to the present. This article describes some of the main features of this transformation and its most notable consequences. The author also analyzes the new norms and institutional bodies created by the changes in the integration paradigm and how they have been influenced by global political and economic tendencies. It is argued that the region is simultaneously more integrated and more globalized.
