La abrupta salida del coronel Lucio Gutiérrez de la presidencia de Ecuador fue producto de un concurso de circunstancias. Los abusos de poder en que incurrió el ex presidente ecuatoriano tuvieron repercusiones graves en la economía y en la calidad de vida de la sociedad ecuatoriana que, estimulada por un medio de comunicación social, Radio La Luna, creó un movimiento civil que aceleró la defenestración de Gutiérrez, ex edecán de otro presidente derrocado: el muy controversial Abdalá Bucaram.
