Trazar un mapa de la condición juvenil latinoamericana plantea un importante desafío a las ciencias sociales de nuestra época. La coexistencia de diferencias internas hace dela juventud una situación de intercambios más que un espacio de referencias y visiones generacionales claramente discernibles, como lo fuera en décadas anteriores. Pese a la difuminación que caracteriza el universo juvenil, hay signos persistentes que ayudan a precisar la relación entre los jóvenes y el futuro de la región. Marcados por la desinstitucionalización, el consumo y la informalidad, los jóvenes siguen subrayandolos modos en que la sociedad se renueva o reestiliza frente a lo político, lo social y lo popular.

To try to create a map of the juvenil econdition in Latin America constitutes an important challenge for the social sciences in our epoch. The coexistence of clearly marked differences within this group makes youth a stage marked by interchanges rather than a clearly defined generational reference, as it was in previous decades. Despite this blurring of definitions of the world of youth, there are clear signs that indicate the relationship between youth and the future of the region. Characterized by a des-institutionalization, by its consumption and informality, the young continue to underline the way in which society renews itself and adopts new stlyes in the face of the political, the social and the popular.
