摘要:Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is an aggressivepathogen that is a common cause of infections both in thecommunity and in hospitals. Before the advent ofantibiotics S. aureus bacteraemia was associated with an80% mortality and the disease often occurred in youngadults.1The advent of penicillin marked a majorbreakthrough in the treatment of serious S. aureusinfections. However, many of these benefits were lostwithin 10 to 15 years of the introduction of penicillinbecause of the widespread resistance that developed along with widespread dissemination of these resistantbacteria.
