摘要:ARISTIDE-AUGUSTE-STANISLAS VERNEUIL (1823-1895), a celebrated French surgeon and scholar, was 36 years of age when he encountered a difficult surgical problem in a leg amputation. This annoying experience prompted him to refer to the current surgical literature for help or solace. The problem was more obscure than he at first believed, and the wilderness of misquotations led him to search the original papers, with most interesting results. He can best describe his Odyssey in his own words, published as a letter on July 1, 1859, in a French medical journal, with the title, "Loopholes, errors, and imperfections in medical literature. The time occasionally necessary to write a phrase of six lines."
