摘要：Few physicians have achieved preeminence as specialists and at the same time contributed so much to medical history as did Dr. Francis R. Packard, whose death in Philadelphia on April 18, 1950 has saddened all of us who knew him. Dr. Packard was born in Philadelphia on March 23, 1870, and had reached his eightieth birthday during the past spring. His father, Dr. John Hooker Packard (1832-1907) was a distinguished physician and surgeon in that city; and Francis Packard-in his own life and work-carried on the best traditions in Philadelphia medicine. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1889, and took his M.D. degree there is 1892. After spending some months in postgraduate training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, he was recalled to Philadelphia as resident in the Pennsylvania Hospital. He eventually became chief otolaryngologist at that institution, in which capacity he served with distinction until his retirement about a decade ago. He carried on a busy private practice and was greatly esteemed by his patients. Meantime, he was honored in 1930 by the presidency of the American Laryngological Association; and shortly thereafter, he became President of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia (1931-1934).
