摘要:In this volume Dr. Ackerknecht brings us a brief but illuminating glimpse of the history of medicine as it is reflected in objects and pictures from the collection of the museum of the Medizinhistorisches Institut der Universitats Zurich, of which he is director. Beginning with primitive medicine, the book follows a chronological arrangement, periods from antiquity to modern times being characteristically represented. Especially effective are the instances where photographs of exhibits are accompanied by pictures from contemporary texts; for example, venesection instruments juxtaposed to a medieval bloodletting scene. The seventy-eight illustrations, some in color, are very fine indeed. A short explanatory text in English and German forms a running commentary to the exhibits.
