摘要：The Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences was established in 1949 under the joint auspices of the World Health Organization and UNESCO "to assist its international member organizations to undertake coordinating and multidisciplinary activities, and generally to promote the progress of medical sciences as a whole." An important aspect of this endeavor has been to facilitate the exchange of information in medicine through the improvement and standardization of medical terminology. The awareness that the growing confusion in medical terminology is an obstacle to the communication of new findings precipitated the convening of an International Group of Experts on Medical Terminology and Medical Dictionaries.
