摘要:IN this time of restricted budgets and expanding services, many hospital libraries are experiencing space shortages because facilities require remodeling or replacement. In situations where only minimal renovation can be realistically anticipated, the librarian needs to maximize existing space. This paper discusses some alternatives for space utilization that may be applied in such circumstances. The alternatives described assume that: less than 20-25% of total shelf space is empty to accommodate new materials; all but the best and most essential gifts are being rejected; and careful selection of new acquisitions has been a policy for years. With the development of new facilities a distant goal rather than a short-term possibility, it becomes necessary to seek solutions that will enable the library to maintain operations as effectively as possible.
