摘要:In the last decade, the development and growth of health sciences libraries have been influenced by many factors. These include the advent of new technology and its applications in libraries; the explosion of growth and use of on-line data bases;the development of library and information consortia and networks; and other contemporary developments in medical research, education, and care. This directory, which updates the 1973 Directory of Health Sciences Libraries in the United States, compiled by Susan Crawford and Gary Dandurand, is much welcomed, as the information contained in the earlier edition has become obsolete. Under the co-editorship of Alan Rees and Susan Crawford, the Directory is one of three specific objectives of the so-called "third survey" of health sciences libraries in the United States. The other two specific objectives were to create a machine-readable format compatible with those national data bases developed for the first two surveys in 1969 (by Crawford) and 1973 (by Crawford and Dandurand); and to publish an analytic monograph entitled Health Sciences Libraries in the United States: Three Decades of Progress, 1950-1980.
