摘要:The authors have analysed John the Golden Mouth’s IInd Homily On Statues and found in it some elements that might be significant for understanding of the Church. Because of the context in which it has been written and preached, the homily presents the Church as a contrast society. The article is divided into four parts. In the first part the authors describe models of the Church according to Avery Dulles and development of the model of the Church as a contrast society. The second part discusses the context of the homily On Statues, the third its contents, and, finally, the fourth the elements that make the IInd Homily relevant for understanding of the Church as a contrast society. John the Golden Mouth has presented the Church as a contrast society by appealing to believers’ emotions, by comparing the Church and theatre, by creating a communion of the rich and the poor. The authors have analysed those examples which present the Church as a contrast society. The results of this analysis show that John the Golden Mouth’s intention was to realise communion of Christians, but also to escape the Emperor’s punishment intended for such behaviour which differs from the customary behaviour in a situation of crisis.
