摘要:For U.S. agriculture to continue along a sustainable path of economic develop-ment, further production increases must be generated by technologies that areboth profitable and more environmentally benign. In this context, we assess therole of these "green" or sustainable technologies in steering agriculture along amore sustainable path. However, the lack of markets for the environmentalattributes associated with green technologies can limit their development. Inaddition, simply making a technology available does not mean it will be adopt-ed. Experience with green technologies such as conservation tillage, integratedpest management, enhanced nutrient management, and precision agriculturedemonstrates that even when technologies are profitable, barriers to adoptingnew practices can limit their effectiveness.
