摘要:This is an ambitious book that should be of interest to economists as well as sociologists interested in development, agro-forestry, and institutions. Population growth in areas of low agricultural productivity has led to increasing poverty and deforestation as farmers have sought to expand cultivated areas. The authors of the chapters in this edited volume aim to identify the fundamental causes of deforestation and land degradation in marginal, hilly areas of Asia and Africa. Property rights have been identified as a key factor in sustainable management of natural resources. The authors examine the evolution of property rights institutions, their consequences for natural resource management, and their e.ciency and equity e.ects using quantitative survey data. The book thus contributes to the growing empirical literature on institutional analysis.
