摘要:On May 20, 2003, brain tissue from a cow that was sold in northern Alberta tested positive for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Reacting to this information, governments in 34 countries2prohibited the import of Canadian ruminant animals and products derived from ruminants.3The import ban created turmoil in the Canadian beef industry as exports normally generate approximately 40 percent of the industry's revenues. The real or potential risks associated with BSE have become a major economic and political issue and have been a rude and stunning wake-up call to stakeholders in the Canadian beef industry.
