摘要:Objectives: To conduct a survey on the knowledge of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) guidelines of doctors employed in the emergency departments. Study design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Emergency Care Units of the major public and private sector hospitals in the city of Karachi. Method: 105 doctors employed in the emergency departments at various hospitals, including those hospitals which are major cardiac care facilities throughout the city of Karachi, were randomly recruited to respond to a questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of multiple-choice questions pertaining to ACLS designed in accordance with the latest guidelines of the American Heart Association. The survey was carried out over a period of two months, from September to October 2006. Result: Out of the 105 physicians assessed, 95.2% were familiar with the terminology of ACLS and 72.38% had acquired knowledge of ACLS through formal training courses. Conclusion: Adherence to the correct guidelines of ACLS is essential for saving lives in emergency care. Our study highlights that the need to train and educate all medical graduates in basic and advanced life support techniques is indispensable.
