The primary manifestation of infection is a skin lesion called “erythema migrans”. Following a prospective study that involved volunteer general practitioners, we estimated the incidence rate of this disease in Alsace in 2001 and 2002. The incidence rate was between 50 and 110 cases per 100,000 population for the entire region. The appearance of cases presented an obvious seasonal variation characterized by maximum values in May and June. Since the seasonal dynamic and the annual incidence of Lyme borreliosis are also influenced by abiotic factors such as humidity and temperature, it is expected that the global warming will have impacts on the epidemiology of this disease, although there is no evidence of a relationship between climate change and the re-emergence of Lyme borreliosis in Europe.
