While the carcinogenic potential of many substances is recognized, there may be several different quantitative toxicity reference values for a given chemical, or, on the contrary, none at all. This situation, which makes it difficult to perform accurate quantitative risk assessments, results from the absence of harmonization between international institutions that establish these reference values. Because there is currently no recognized method for developing such values in France, this article reviews the principal published methods for their development. Our goal is to describe the most important methodologic points to be considered in deriving or choosing toxicity reference values for carcinogenic agents.
