The effects of chronic exposure to fine particles on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality dominate this health impact. The large size of the exposed population means that the public health benefits of air quality management policies can be very substantial. Nevertheless there is a continuing gap between scientific knowledge about the health impact of air pollution and the implementation of effective public policies in Europe.
