Based on hazard assessment and the identification of dangerous phenomena, these thresholds are used to determine the zones where toxic effects are present. In the absence of VSTAF, companies must propose a set of acute thresholds for required risk assessments. Two options are available: (1) development of their own thresholds following the applicable French methodology or (2) choosing (and justifying the choice) from among existing international acute threshold values. The choice is not an easy one and the determination of specific acute thresholds requires toxicological knowledge. INERIS has developed a guidance document offering a transparent method for choosing acute thresholds when no VSTAF is available. These guidelines propose successive steps that depend on both toxicological knowledge and available data. Although the method has some limitations, the document makes it possible to obtain a set of indicative acute threshold values for use in land use planning.
