The final goal is to apply a transparent procedure in a context of scientific uncertainty about the consequences of exposures to potentially harmful agents and thereby obtain information useful for decision makers. Risk assessment has two possible objectives: i) to compare and rank risk management options, situations, industrial techniques, or substances; ii) to assess, with more or less uncertainty, the potential health consequences of a given situation. In the first case (ranking assessment), risk estimates are less important than the ranking of options. In the second case (estimating assessment), the risk estimate is the management criteria.
