In large part, increased life expectancy, the growth of the French population, and improved screening and diagnostic practices and tools explain this trend. Transformations in lifestyles and residential environments probably contribute as well. At the same time, this increase in incidence is accompanied by spatial inequalities in cancer that express both social and environmental inequalities. The aim of this article is to inventory the risks related to interactions between environmental exposures and cancer, and to evaluate the impact of environmental factors in these spatial inequities in cancer rates. This geographical approach demonstrates the utility of this discipline and its tools, such as geographical information systems, in environmental research.
