Currently available data on their genotoxicity show high variability in study results as well as complexity associated with the use of the existing methods that makes it difficult to interpret and compare these results. Although some existing genotoxicity evaluation methods can be applied to nanomaterials, they require adaptation, to take the physicochemical specificities of nanomaterials into account. This report of published data in the field of nanogenotoxicology presents some possible mechanisms of this genotoxicity, an evaluation of the methods used in various studies, the factors that influence the results, and some recommendations to enable subsequent studies to control for these factors.
