The respective contributions of different methodological approaches : clinical observations of single cases, psychometric analyses of groups of patients and experiments with animal are underlined. The absence of any integrative theoretical approach of the frontal lobe functions is highlighted with the noticeable exception of the Luria’s contribution. The appearance of the cognitive approach is then briefly described with a special emphasis to the contribution of Tim Shallice and Antonio Damasio.
