The evolution of this interest respects the development of the neuropsychological concepts of memory with current well defined memory systems. The literature, sometimes contradictory, highlights an atypical functioning of some of these memory systems, such as episodic memory. The present paper reviews the current data on memory studies in autism and interprets these data considering the main cognitive theories of autism: the perceptual theories (Weak Central Coherence and Enhanced Perceptual Functioning) that suggest a local bias in autistic perception and the theory of mind hypothesis that refers to social interactions impairments in autism and executive dysfunction hypothesis which can account for stereotyped behaviors and limited interests. Finally, perspectives for future research are discussed.
