In healthy young adults, these emotional events are more likely to be better remembered than events lacking emotional importance. Many recent studies have examined whether this emotional enhancement of memory (EEM) is preserved in healthy older participants and patients with Alzheimer's disease. There is much evidence that EEM remains intact across lifespan. In addition, many studies demonstrate a positivity effect in attention and memory for healthy older participants. Conversely, the memory benefit elicited by emotional content seems disrupted in Alzheimer's disease, as demonstrated in a large range of memory tasks. This lack of EEM does not appear to stem from deficits in the ability to recognize or to process emotional information. Indeed, patients with Alzheimer's disease often perform normally on emotional processing or emotional recognition tasks. One possible explanation for the absence of emotional memory enhancement in Alzheimer's disease is the disruption of the modulation of encoding and consolidation processes typically elicited by emotion. At the neural level, the absence of EEM in Alzheimer's disease seems to result from the dysfunction generated by the atrophy of medio-temporal regions, especially of the amygdala.
