Less than 30 papers on rehabilitation of long-term memory have been reported in the Cicerone et al. (2011) review, including only six randomized controlled studies. In this paper, we present first a short overview of current theoretical models of long-term memory, and of the methodological issues of cognitive rehabilitation. Then, we present a review of recent evidence on memory rehabilitation. Reorganization/facilitation strategies have been found effective in patients suffering from moderately severe memory deficits, while errorless learning is recommended for more severe impairments. Compensatory strategies (such as diaries, notes) are useful, whatever the severity of the deficits. More recent techniques include dynamic visual imagery (« self-imaging ») or virtual reality. Finally, we address the issue of the generalization of working memory rehabilitation on long-term episodic memory.
