This reserve, built on regular participation in educational or leisure activities, has been linked to a reduced risk of AD-related pathology. In order to identify the neurobiological substrates underlying this reserve, murine models have largely been used. Indeed, AD transgenic mice models exhibit, after environmental enrichment exposure, a delayed progression of the pathology, measurable at both cognitive and anatomical levels. Thus, the environmental enrichment paradigm seems to be appropriate to study neural processes involved in the cognitive reserve. Recent studies have analyzed these processes at the cellular and molecular levels, suggesting in particular, that hippocampal adult neurogenesis could be involved.
