Aleg, a small town in southern Mauritania, must cope with these changes. After years of a policy appropriate for drought, Aleg is faced with flooding it has not seen for 30 years. Adding to these problems is the lack of urban planning: as nomads fleeing drought settled down in Aleg, homes were and continue to be built on former water channels and in flood areas, and no infrastructure is available to stock or distribute water. These difficulties are all exacerbated by a constant lack of funds that prevents any improvement.
