Average tree density was 78 trees/ha and varied significantly. Farmers created these parklands by preserving and maintaining useful species on their farms, that is, species whose fruit, seeds or leaves can be processed into useful products. These orchards are thus the result of human intervention in vegetation dynamics, and their diversity results from ecological factors affecting the village populations and the management of trees.
