These cover huge parts of Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and the northernmost fringe of Tanzania. East African rangelands, however, differ profoundly from those of the Sahel with regard to climate (two annual rainy seasons), geology (volcanism), geomorphology, elevation (up to nearly 6,000m) with a large highlands component, soils, vegetation and its productivity, and a strong wildlife component within the animal production systems, hence the economically important derived turism resource.
