Natural resource management programs aim at integrating both conservation and development issues in the land use managing initiatives, with involvement of local stakeholders. Despite an ostentatious willingness to set up integration between wildlife and livestock issues, stakes that are raised on the field show a deep contradiction between conservation and ranching priorities. Most of the initiatives failed to match herder’s needs and conservation issues on shared areas. A review of field actions on conservation/development integration is then proposed focusing on livestock/wildlife interactions within the framework of policies, programs and projects in subSaharan Africa. We propose to organize the debates on economical, sanitarian and sociopolitical issues around the following three themes: i) economical valorisation of biodiversity by herders; ii) management of sanitary risk at the wildlife/livestock interface; and iii) social and political issues at the rangeland/protected area interface.
