Aridity is one threatening factor - promoting salinization, soil degradation, wind erosion, etc. The problem is that aridity is dependent on the rate of evaporation, a long-ignored and complex climatic factor, and is thus difficult to measure. Drought, defined as a prolonged water deficit (relative to mean or median levels), can have a direct impact on desertification, especially when it persists for several years. Many questions arise with respect to accurately defining a dry season or year, spatially and temporally pinpointing droughts, and objectively assessing the economic impacts of droughts.
