A frequency analysis of ten-day rainfall during the rainy season (from June to October) over the past thirty years showed that a short, intermediate dry season occurred from July-August. Sugar cane productivity could be improved by counter-balancing this by an extra supply of water. A simple method is put forward for monitoring the water-balance, ideally on a day-to-day basis, and detecting days when the water deficit could be compensated by extra irrigation.
