Page(s) : 183-8 Published in: 1992 This paper reviews data of a geographical, sedimentological and historical nature showing the Aral has dropped to the level it reached in 1990 at least three times since the 5th century BP. On each occasion, the crisis was triggered off by man diverting the Amu Daria to the Caspian Sea. Today’s crisis is even more serious than before and restoring the Aral to its pre- 1960 level would require 60 km 3 per year for about two hundred years.
