Remote-sensing, by identifying physiographical indicators and spatially extrapolating pinpoint data, provides information on the main parameters explaining superficial runoff in accordance with accepted operational forecasting methods such as those of the SCS or Orstom. As to the useful supply of ground water, the region’s cartography is drawn up essentially according to pedological and ground information accumulated, managed and represented in a GIS. The results may then be integrated into models of rain forecast and farming statistics and be used for national planning or environmental monitoring.
