However, since rainfall and drought in the Mediterranean region varies considerably from year to year, it is rather hard to assess how suitable the newly-available lands are to rainfed crops. The question can be examined in two ways. In the present paper, we analyse the respective values or each in a case study of soil suitability to wheat in a test area. The first method involved field trials with a limited number of soil types and climatic conditions; the values measured then being extrapolated to the entire study area using expert knowledge. The second used simulations of crop growth and water balance for all soils in the area; this requires a thorough knowledge of the soil variability. Both methods used in the case study enabled soil suitability to be classified. Using both allowed the specific advantages of each to be combined, i.e. field validation for the first, and exhaustive spatial and temporal analysis for the second.
