Beside the very well known Easterly waves of 3-5 day periodicity, two other wave systems exist: Easterly waves of 6-9 day periodicity and equatorial Kelvin waves of about 6 day periodicity. These two wave systems are less frequent during the summer than the 3-5 day Easterly waves, but when they are present, they modulate convection and rainfall in West and Central Africa at a level equivalent to that of the 3-5 day Easterly waves.
