Page(s) : 151-6 Published in: 1997 Continuing rainfall shortages and a decrease in river flow rates since 1968 have had major economic and environmental consequences for the alluvial plains of the Niger inland delta. In order to make natural summer flooding easier, increasing the surface area of rice that can be cultivated and helping fish move around, fishermen and rice farmers have dug channels through the banks and levees of the rivers and their tributaries. But these simple operations, conducted without any equipment to control water flows such as weirs and floodgates, does not allow the annual flooding to be successfully managed, and could cause problems if rainfall returns to normal.
