The study of this phenomenon is of a very great importance when considering the risks for construction stability on the one hand and on the reduction of dam reservoir capacity on the other. Such is particularely the case for the Ouizert dam built in an arid zone where water resources are becoming less available. This dam, located at about 35 Km from the south-west of Mascara city, is well-known for its considerable water leakage. With a capacity of 100 million m 3, the Ouizert dam was designed to increase the regularization level of Wadi El Hammam in order to insure both drinking water for Oran city and industrial supply of the Arzew complex while irrigating the El Habra perimeter located at northern Mohammadia and contributing to Bouhanifia dam filling by water release. However, the Ouizert dam, which has never reached its maximum level, is threatened by water side-leakages which have grown notably with time. The discharge of water exfiltration has been estimated at about 1 m 3/s, corresponding to an important loss of water. The present paper aims at reporting on the Ouizert dam water side-leakages and as well as giving results of a physico-chemical and piezometric study. The variation between the exfiltration water discharge and the reservoir level is also analyzed.
