Page(s) : 117-22 Published in: 1998 In the hyperarid zone of the Algerian Sahara, the Touat foggara oases are threatened by intensive use of the underlying groundwater. The ksour of Touat and their palm groves represent a highly valuable cultural resource and historical evidence of the trans-Saharan routes taken by the caravans carrying gold, slaves and salt. These treasures of the past could quite well disappear within a few years if the present type of allochthonous development continues.
