Page(s) : 219-26 Published in: 1998 The health status of cork oaks (Quercus suber) was assessed on 76 circular plots (11 m radius). An initial evaluation revealed 24% healthy stands, 69% traumatized stands, and 7% decayed stands, i.e. localized decay. Analysis of the FAC parameter results indicated that : âÇ“ density, basal area and cover were closely related to high mortality rates ; âÇ“ age (young) and cork-barking characteristics of stands were also found to be related to mortality rates ; âÇ“ stands on sandy soils over clay did not reach the critical mortality level. The study also highlighted that stands of timber trees, over-stump timber trees, copsewood under timber trees, and old stands of low density and high basal area characterized area with the least marked degree of decay. The results indicated that silvicultural pratices could be functionally efficient with a suitable management model.
