In the city of Maroua, the commercialisation of firewood is a flourishing activity, rendering income to the modest households. In this activity, men and women are active in this business respectively in bulk and retail sales. Firewood is sold in almost every part of the town. It is sold in markets, by the roadside and in front of houses in various districts. It is sold in various small quantities, fagots and pieces. Prices of firewood vary from average amount of 145 CFAF per heap in the town, 217 CFAF in a trunk to 365 CFAF a fagot. These prices undergo great fluctuations according to the law of supply and demand on the markets. The market of firewood in Maroua remains dominated by the following species: Acacia sp. Combretum glutinosum, Balanites aegyptiaca, Anogiessus leiocarpus and Prosopis africana. Moreover, housewives are the greatest consumers of firewood, followed by restaurant dealers, the local beer producers and meat sellers. Finally, the increase of the consumption in the city of Maroua has a negative impact on the vegetation in rural areas. Hence, the disappearance in the long term of certain species and the total cutting of the forest exposes the land to a phenomenon of erosion, leading to poor soil fertility, poor agricultural production and the expansion of the wilderness.
