In recent years, a policy has been implemented to enhance the development of agriculture in the Sahara, with the overall aim of increasing the cropping area and stalling outmigration by giving people access to landed farm property. As the Sahara desert is a harsh but delicate natural environment, considerable care must be taken when conducting farming activities. Before involvement in such activities, it is important to distinguish between land for development and for cultivation. There also has to be a balance between the natural, ecological and socioeconomic factors to ensure sustainable agricultural production. In addition, precautionary measures, knowhow and resources are essential parameters to be taken into account. The Gassi-Touil project is a concrete example of land development for the purposes of modernizing an oasis. All of the above-described factors are encompassed in this model, and should highlight the medium-term limitations of such development projects.
