Page(s) : 123-8 Published in: 1999 Urban agriculture, i.e. homegardening, is very common and practiced to an increasing extent around several large Sahelian towns. A cartographie assessment of seasonal variations in homegarden sizes was conducted in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) from April 1995 to April 1996. Data was collected using GPS, with GIS software for data analysis and presentation of the results. The study showed that at least 48 sites in the city are utilized permanently or occasionally during the year for urban homegardening. Some sites disappear in the dry season during the rainy season and cool season. There were 39 sites in April 1995 (dry season), only 15 sites in August 1995 (rainy season), 41 sites in December 1995 (cool season), and then 32 sites in April 1996 (dry season). The homegardening area peaked in December (approximately 175 ha), in the middle of the cool season. There were marked between season variations in this area, i.e. around 80% when comparing the cool season and the hot dry season). Thematic maps highlight the homegardening area at different sites on a seasonal basis. Five different homegarden zones represent more than 50% of the area used for this purpose in the city, regardless of the geographical survey period considered : 62% in April 1995, 56% in August 1995, 63% in December 1995, and 66% in April 1996. The discussion highlights the question of urban homegarden sustainability in urban situations with critical water shortages and high infrastructure and building development.
