Page(s) : 263-71 Published in: 2000 The present study was carried out to calibrate the Epic-Phase simulation model and test it with rainfed sunflower crops in the Meknès region of Morocco. Data from an experiment conducted in 1996 (highly productive rainy season) at ENA Meknès were mainly used for this calibration, supplemented with data obtained from the literature. The calibration quality was assessed under several soil-tillage conditions on the basis of phenology, leaf area index, grain yield, above-ground biomass and water use. The model was evaluated for the same location using 4 years of experimental data that had not been used for the calibration. In 1991, 1992 and 1993, soil water was efficiently simulated whereas grain yields were overestimated as a result of sparrow pest damage that was not considered by the model. In 1997, the simulated leaf area index was in close agreement with the field observations, but yields were slightly overestimated by the model because hail damage was not taken into consideration. The relative error of prediction was 6% for soil water quantity and 7% for water use, with extremes of 10% and 22%, respectively, in the poorest conditions. Based on the results of a survey conducted in the Meknès region in 1997 (23 fields), the model was able to efficiently simulate grain yield and plant water use for a wide range of soil and cropping conditions. The prediction accuracy was there-fore sufficient to use the model for assessing different rainfed sunflower crop management strategies in the Meknès region.
