其他摘要：The urban form is the result of a continuous process, which requires the research of the citys expansion and transformation. It is not possible to understand the evolution in a specific period, without studying the previous stage. First, this investigation studies the foundation of Maracaibo by Maldonado in 1574, describes its process of consolidation and expansion; and second, the characteristics of the city during the 17th and 18th centuries. The impact that the natural geographic features the coastal line, the bay, the sewers, the topography- and the constructions that were previously made by the indians had upon its organization and morphology, were taken into consideration. Due to the unexistance of maps of natural features, the inconsistency of the foundation site and the absence of urban documents, the sources of information that were able to be used were travelers anecdotes, memories and maps.At the same time, the citythen was reenacted taking the actual plans as a starting point, considering the hypothesis of how land has been added to the lake in different periods of time; first as a result of the accumulation of sediments dragged by sewers, and second, as a result of mans doing.
