摘要：Estudo descritivo de abordagem qualitativa com objetivo de compreender as representações sociais dos alimentos sob a ótica de pessoas com diabetes mellitus tipo 2. Foi utilizado o referencial teóricometodológico das representações sociais. Foram entrevistados 14 participantes, cadastrados em um Centro de Pesquisa e Extensão universitária do interior paulista, em 2008. Para análise dos dados utilizou-se técnica de análise temática. Os resultados apontaram que as categorias "prato cheio", "besteiradas/lambiscar", "alimentos para diabetes não têm sabor", "essas dietas tiram tudo de nós" e "como, até matar a fome" estão ancoradas na categoria central "alimentos para diabetes não sustentam". Concluiu-se que profissionais de saúde devem considerar aspectos simbólicos e culturais que são associados aos alimentos pelas pessoas com diabetes mellitus tipo 2, promovendo um novo olhar em relação à orientação do plano alimentar.
其他摘要：This descriptive and qualitative study investigates the social representations of food of individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The Social Representations Theory was used as theoretical and methodological framework. 14 individuals registered in a research and extension university center in the interior of São Paulo, Brasil, were interviewed in 2008. Thematic analysis was used and the results indicated that the categories "full plate", "nibble on/snack", "foods for diabetics have no flavor", "these diets take everything from you" and "how to kill hunger" are anchored on the main category "foods for diabetics are not satisfying". Health professionals should consider symbolic and cultural concepts hold by individuals with type 2 diabetes, which influence the way they see food, aiming to enable them to have a new perspective of guidance provided on diet.
